Cirrus by Panasonic

Our real-time traffic management system and V2X data exchange platform is already being deployed with DOTs across North America, creating safer, less congested roads.

The most innovative data platform in transportation, already making an impact

Since its introduction in 2018, our Cirrus by Panasonic V2X platform has been embraced by a growing number of transportation agencies and, building upon more than six decades of automotive expertise, is recognized as the most innovative and trusted V2X mobility system in North America. Our scalable Software-as-a-Service solution offers our customers flexible, secure, open digital architecture for traffic management, safety and communication between vehicles, the road and everything that touches it.

According to The Ray, more than 105 million connected vehicles are expected to be on our roads by 2022, producing more than 150 petabytes of data annually. We’re helping our partners get ahead of this ubiquitously connected future with scalable, here-and-now solutions that will help prevent crashes and congestion, improve emergency services response times, shorten commutes and decrease emissions.

  • By 2022 connected vehicles will produce 150 petabytes of data per year. The equivalent of 15,000 years of TV content

Open and collaborative

We are committed to providing an open development platform for sharing, collaborating, defining and standardizing the future of smart mobility. That’s because we are committed to it for the long haul. While some partners may be able to provide an aspect of traffic management systems of this magnitude, only Cirrus by Panasonic addresses all aspects of an integrated solution – from roadway and vehicle hardware, software apps and cloud-based analytics to machine learning, AI and integration experience with more than 30 major international automakers.

Uniquely qualified to build tomorrow’s roads, today

We also offer scalable, turn-key deployment solutions that allow our DOT partners to seamlessly standardize and scale connected vehicle deployment from concept to implementation and operations and maintenance across states and municipalities. By offering a phased, scalable approach to Road-Side Unit (RSU) and On-Board Unit (OBU) implementation, we can further standardize and optimize a process, making startup and growth equally manageable. We’ve been a tier-one automotive partner for more than 60 years, and we are committed to the long-term future of connected roadways and smart mobility.

An "Internet of Vehicles"

We’re already making a difference with a growing number of DOTs across the country, partnering to build smarter, safer roads. This allows DOTs to monitor real-time traffic and roadway conditions. And they can now share in seconds critical safety information on weather, traffic alerts and other driving hazards. By creating a connected transportation system – an "internet of vehicles" – drivers and traffic managers will receive real-time information about road conditions such as traffic delays and icy conditions through continuous and automatic communications between individual vehicles and roadside infrastructure.

  • Responses that took up to 15 minutes are now implemented in seconds
Now, a roadway operator can make instantaneous decisions about deploying snowplows during winter storms – or optimizing how traffic flows through the city. Emergency responders can start toward a crash the second they learn that an airbag has been deployed. And backups that could take hours can be greatly reduced or avoided altogether. Panasonic’s phased approach allows DOTs to deploy these technologies at scale – not just for main highways and thoroughfares, but for all roadways.

Lifesaving data

Transportation industry experts estimate as much as a 400% increase in roadway efficiency with wide-scale deployment of connected vehicle technology – without the expense of widening roadways and adding lanes. This solution also has the power to save lives through a significant reduction in the number of non-impaired, multi-vehicle crashes – research estimates as high as an 80% reduction.

Previously, the Colorado DOT had projected that a statewide V2X system would generate more than 2 billion safety messages per hour from vehicles. By leveraging the extensive amount of data available on road conditions (from vehicles, sensors, cameras and more), drivers can receive notifications about potentially unsafe driving conditions even before they begin experiencing traffic delays.

With the Utah DOT, we’re implementing the first fully extendable, scalable open architecture platform specifically engineered for roadway operators, municipalities and transportation mobility centers – from connected RSU infrastructure to a connected fleet of state vehicles to an open exchange to provide data access to third parties.

Our joint project with the Georgia DOT and The Ray includes a V2X data ecosystem deployed along a rural 18-mile stretch of I-85, creating a proof-of-concept test environment, including a series of real-time demonstrations for additional interested stakeholders. Although 19% of people in America live in rural areas, almost half of crash deaths – 46% – occur there.*
